My Copilot

You don't have a lot of security when you try to fly alone. That's why God has blessed you with a copilot!

His heart is established; he will not be afraid. Psalm 112:8

I am convinced my wife has "stealth" capabilities when we go shopping. We can enter a department store at the same time, walk into the same section of the store, and she disappears. She's there, and then she's not there.

Until I find her, I don't feel quite right. My copilot is missing, and I'm a little panicked. Here I am in a shopping center, alone! It’s like being in enemy territory without an ally.

Marriage is supposed to be like that. We are supposed to feel somewhat uncomfortable when apart from our spouse because he or she is our copilot while we are down here on earth. We fly the same plane together, and there is less security in flying alone.

As today's Scripture passage suggests, God is in the "heart-establishing" business, bringing the calming security of confident trust. In marriage, our spouse is one through whom He desires to work in order to establish this foundation for blessing. God wants to involve you in providing stability for your spouse. God wants to reassure your spouse that he or she doesn't need to be afraid of the bumps along the journey because—beyond any doubt—he or she is not alone.

The next time you find yourself without your copilot, pick up the phone and call. Let your spouse know how much you miss him or her. Say you're looking forward to being together because things just aren't the same when he or she is not around. Give your spouse the security of knowing that you think he or she is important, thought of, and deeply cared about. Announce that he or she still melts your heart and lights your fire. Look for ways to help "establish" the heart of your spouse.

How can you bring more stability or a firmer foundation into your marriage?

God, thank You for blessing me with a copilot.
