Mustard Seed Faith

God can use the faith of a mustard seed to change the world. All we need to do is trust Him.

Sometimes a Bible passage becomes so familiar that—without thinking—we assume we understand and live by its truth. But we might need to take a second look.

“I tell you the truth,’ Jesus said, ‘if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there ’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you” (Matt. 17:20).

Do we really believe that?

I used to read these verses and think that they were just an exaggeration that Jesus was making in order to make a point about the power of faith. Because we can’t literally move mountains … can we?  Mountains are big.

But first, you have to believe that we truly have the power to change the world, and you have to believe it starts in you—in your decision to trust God with all things, big and small.

I believe that even a small act of faith can result in a large harvest, because the Jesus who raised the dead to life in the New Testament is still alive and active today.

In John 14:12, Jesus says outright that through his believers, the Holy Spirit will continue performing miracles. In fact, he says that we “will do even greater things than these."

Even greater things than what Jesus did? That’s a large promise, and certainly an empowering one.

If we know that even small faith can have fruitful results, and that our God himself promised us that we would be able to do greater acts than he, what is there to question?

Plant your mustard seed of faith, and watch how God blesses the harvest.

Discussion Points:

  • What are some aspects in your life that you struggle with surrendering to God?
  • What are some mountains in your life than need to be moved? Consider inviting God to do something miraculous.
  • Reflect on Jesus’ promise in John 14:12: “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these.” Do you believe that Jesus’ believers can do even greater things than he did?
