More ... Contentment
1 Timothy 6:6 (NIV®)
Godliness with contentment is great gain.
We are a nation of people who are staggering with envy, and it’s as real in the church as without. I once read that no matter where we are on the socioeconomic scale, we think we’d be happier if we had 25 percent more. If there is a biblical word that captures God’s desire for our thoughts regarding “things,” I believe it would be contentment. This verse says that a focus on godliness with an attitude of contentment is something Christ-followers will benefit from. And then it contrasts that with the thought life of those of “corrupt mind,” “who think that godliness is a means to financial gain” (v. 5). I’m not advocating complacency or being satisfied with giving less than our best effort, but I am suggesting that contentment is possible. If envy is something that you struggle with, ask the Lord to give you a spirit of contentment.
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your plans and provision for me. I put my trust in You and Your oversight of my life. When I am tempted to be envious or anxious about the circumstances of my life, give me a spirit of contentment. I will trust in You, my Lord and my Redeemer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
