Milagros - Miracles

Milagros Matos’ strength is in God, she says.

Forty-two-year-old Milagros, which means “miracles,” is of Haitian descent, but lives in the Dominican Republic. She raises seven children – including a foster child -- by herself, with support from World Vision sponsorship.

Milagros discovered she was HIV positive in a near-death experience giving birth to her son Genesis on Jan. 13, 2010—the same day of the destructive Haiti earthquake. Since that day it’s been her mission to show other HIV positive people they can still lead a healthy meaningful life despite the disease.

"God gives me strength. I want to continue being a strong person and to finish raising my children," she says.

For income she sells produce and homemade bread at the local market. Milagros received training from World Vision in small business management, nutritious meal preparation, and HIV education.
