Luke 6:37-38 (NIV®)
“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
We’ve often heard Luke 6:38 read in the context of giving our money, but that verse is about much more than money. It follows Jesus’ reminder about the dangers of judgment and condemnation and the positive consequences of forgiveness. If we will give understanding, if we will give mercy, if we will give forgiveness and give our resources, God will give back to us more abundantly than we give to others. In fact, it says that He takes note of the measure we use in showing understanding and mercy and forgiveness and generosity and considers that when He gives to us. A generous spirit is a sign of spiritual maturity and something we should cultivate.
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the many times I have stood in judgment or condemnation of others. Show me how to extend mercy to others as You have extended it to me. Show me how to forgive as You have forgiven me. May I always build others up rather than tear them down. Deliver me from any attitudes or actions that do not please You, Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
