Marriage Misunderstandings

Renee Swope shares why feeling misunderstood is just a normal part of being married!

Misunderstood. That’s how I’ve felt many times in the 20 years I’ve been married! Hi, I’m Renee Swope for Proverbs 31 Ministries.

I remember when my husband and I first got married and our pastor told us how important communication is.

So, we set out with a big commitment to communicate and worked hard at trying to really listen to each other, but honestly, we both feel misunderstood sometimes.

Not long ago we had a great talk. I thought I was making progress in helping JJ understand me. He responded with a hug and I was sure my thoughts were understood and valued. Well, a few days later I made the mistake of asking JJ if he really “got” what I was saying when we talked.

Um, he didn’t remember our conversation! Thankfully I didn’t get mad that time. I just summed it up for him—again—and we both laughed. I guess being misunderstood is just part of being married!
