Wives, submit to your husbands, as it is fitting in the Lord.
Submission is a difficult concept in a marriage. No one likes to submit and give up control. No one likes to feel that someone else is “over” them, especially in a marriage. And even more so when you as the wife believe with all your heart your way is better. But God is pretty clear on this topic. He does not give us any wiggle room. He does not say: “Submit if your husband is a good man,” “Submit if your husband has prayed over the decision and you both agree,” “Submit if your husband is wise.” No, the verse says simply to submit.
How do you as a wife wrap your brain around this verse and follow it? What I have had to do in my marriage is realize I am ultimately submitting to my Heavenly Father, not my husband. I am choosing to submit to God and His command, and my trust is ultimately in God, not my husband. God is good, God is wise, and God will work all things for good to those that love Him.
In submission, you can still have a voice. But in the end, one person has to be the leader, and God has given that title to the husband while commanding that the wife submit. Honestly, God has given us a gift even though we do not always see it that way. God is saying that the man is the leader, and the man will be held accountable for the way he led the family, not the wife. My job as a wife is to submit and trust in God. Even though I don’t understand God’s way of thinking all the time, I need to trust in Him and His ways.
Lord, I want to obey you and be a Godly wife. Submitting to my husband is not an easy task. In my mind, I am right the majority of the time and I don’t believe that my husband is a good leader at all times. But because I love you and because I trust you and your wisdom, I will obey you. God, I pray that you honor my obedience and you will bless my family and me. My prayer is that through my obedience you will teach me your ways, and guide me as I walk this road of submission.
