Making Gender Differences Work

Gender differences can increase or decrease synergy. Here's how to make different viewpoints work for everyone.

The differences between men and women can make or break teamwork.

When it's good, it's great. When it's bad, it is awful. And when opposites attract, things can get really ugly! As the leader or a follower, you can learn how to build and love good teams of men and women - avoiding the bad and the ugly.

One plus one equals 11 in teamwork
Hold the index finger on your right hand next to your left hand's index finger, and you will see 11 - an illustration of synergy. The differences between men and women are the building blocks and cement of a good team, which equals the kind of synergy that can multiply results by ten.

Men and women not only look different...
...they see things differently. Good teams need different perspectives to see the whole picture in problem solving and goal accomplishment. Appreciate another's point of view and look for compatibility of how different parts fit together.

Avoid criticizing what is different...
...and search for how different operating styles between men and women actually advance the team’s work toward a common purpose. Leaders should assign people to tasks for which they are gifted and impassioned, and followers should do whatever is needed regardless of interests and abilities.

Be subject to one another... and women serving one another in view of not only a greater common purpose, but also in light of the organization and authority to which we submit ourselves. Lay aside all encumbrances of pride and preferences when working toward a mutual goal.

Protect against opposites attracting
Make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts. Men and women should always meet in public work places - never meet alone in a private place. Never assume there’s never a problem. Always be on alert in all ways.

Romance at work can...
...ruin your life everywhere - not only your career, but also your home and personal life. Be careful what you communicate with your words, dress, touch and eyes. When hormones hum, run! Remember humming hormones block your thinking and lead to ugly decisions.

Set your minds on the things above...
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men (or women), since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." (Colossians 3:23-24)
