Loving as He Loved!

Description

Christ set a standard for husbands. Do you love your wife as Christ loved the church?

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church.
Ephesians 5:25

What a standard Christ has set for us as husbands! As today's Scripture verse points out, we are to love as He loves.

But what exactly does it mean to love my wife as "Christ also loved the church"? How can I, a mere man, love someone the way Christ loved? How can I find it in me to love someone that way?

I got some answers to those questions during a year-long devotional emphasis in which I studied the Gospels, paying close attention to Christ's love and making application of what I found to my relationship with Teresa. I was convicted by numerous insights I gained in that study. Among them were:

Christ moved first. Our Lord took the initiative in caring. None of us sought after Him, but He came to seek and save us. Teresa can benefit from more of my taking the initiative in expressing love, making plans, helping at home.

Christ left His world of heaven and entered into our world. Jesus role models a challenge for me to understand Teresa's world, which is active, outdoors, and socially engaging. The Lord then prompts me with His love to leave my passive world of reading books, indoors, and being content to be alone and go love my wife in her world.

Christ gave Himself up for those He loved and kept giving all the way to the cross. The Holy Spirit seems to often quietly ask me, "David, what have you given up for Teresa recently?" The answers are sometimes embarrassing and often convicting. He seems to quietly say, "I don't believe you've out-given Me yet." Fresh ideas seem to come, providing creative expressions of my love for Teresa.

In what ways can you "leave your own world" for your spouse today?

God, help me to continue to court my spouse even though we have already walked down the aisle.
