Look to Jesus
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.” Psalm 23:1–3, TNIV
Recently, I had a very scary moment when I was lost in a city. My friend had guided us to where I needed to drop her off. The directions were very straightforward, which I was relieved about because I had forgotten to bring our GPS unit to guide me home.
After I dropped her off, I faithfully backtracked to the freeway, but then discovered that while there was an off-ramp from the freeway, which I had used earlier, there wasn’t an on-ramp to get back onto that freeway. I drove right under the freeway and was in completely foreign territory.
I panicked. I didn’t know what street I could follow that would parallel the freeway so that I could somehow find a new on-ramp. It was nighttime and there weren’t many places open where I could park and ask someone, plus the neighborhood didn’t look very safe.
I called my husband to ask him to check a map website on his computer and guide me home. He had to figure out where I was to begin with, then how to guide me to the nearest freeway on-ramp.
Usually, when I read this psalm, I think about fuzzy white sheep following a shepherd through rolling green hills. But after my experience, I realized that Jesus as my shepherd is like my husband guiding me home through those dark city streets with the scary-looking drug dealers on the corners. Jesus is there to lead me safely through both the dangerous neighborhoods and pretty meadows of life.
FAITH STEP: Remember that Jesus is your shepherd and is there to guide you. Today, actively look to Jesus for guidance through the problems you face rather than giving in to stress or fear. Take time out to say a quick prayer and ask for help. And in the quiet, happy moments today, remember to stop and thank Him for leading you there.
