Light into Darkness
"To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace."
One of my favorite services each year at church is the Christmas Eve candlelight service. Often after sharing God's Word, we will turn off the lights and for a moment we are consumed in darkness. As we wait with anticipation a candle is lit, and then another and then another. Each small flame producing barely enough light to see next to you, but when combined with hundreds, the light fills the room. Once light enters the darkness, everything changes.
So it is with our world and our lives. Two-thousand years ago Jesus came to earth as a baby boy. He came into the world's darkness with its sin and its suffering. He did not come bringing the light but He came as the Light. Once the darkness of this world beheld the light, it knew that its time was at hand. Now as we walk one more year away from the birth of Christ, we walk one more day closer to His return. On that day, He will dispel darkness completely and there will be no more night. Until then, He has called all believers to hold up their lives as a candle in this dark world. One of us alone may not have a large impact, but together with the power of God's Spirit, we can see our world changed forever. After all, every new believer is given light so the more we reach with the gospel, the brighter the light shines.
Life Lesson: We receive light in our darkness so that we can give light to the darkness in others lives.
Thank You for Jesus and the Light that He gives. Father, give me the power to shine brightly in this dark world. I pray for opportunities to share Jesus with others this Christmas and on into the New Year. In Jesus' name, Amen.
