Lifting Burdens

In Kenya, Sabina and Christina carried 70 pounds of water across difficult terrain twice each day. Now, a World Vision water project has brought clean water to them.

Women and girls have transported water from distant sources for millennia. In Genesis 24, Abraham’s servant first saw Rebekah, Isaac’s future wife, at a well. Jesus also met the Samaritan woman at a well. In most of the developing world, women and girls disproportionately bear the burden of collecting water for their families.

Women and girls around the world spend 200 million hours each day collecting water. In sub-Saharan Africa they average a daily roundtrip of 6K or 3.73 miles. Not only is this a waste of time, it takes away from the valuable things a woman or girl could be doing, such as studying, being with family, working, worshipping, or even resting.

That’s why World Vision has worked for 30 years to provide safe water and improved sanitation and hygiene to those who need it. With a team of 500 experts working in communities around the world, World Vision reaches one new person with safe water every 30 seconds.

Dear God, You promise in Psalm 23 to be close beside us and protect us even as we walk through the darkest valley. We claim this promise for women and girls who trek to get water for their families. Stay close to them, strengthen them, and protect them.

Thank you for praying for women and girls who walk for water daily. Now sign up to walk or run a 6K on May 6 to bring water to more of them.
