Lifelines

Description

Do you have a friend who is drifting in her relationship with Christ due to "busyness?" Remind her who her True Lifeline is.

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17, ESV)

I heard a story about two women who had been friends for years. One of them, Lauren, needed dialysis three times a week and her appointments were on a strict schedule. Her friend Beth knew that Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings were set aside for the life-saving procedures.

One day the two were out wandering the mall when they saw that their favorite author was doing a book signing the following Friday morning from 9-11 am—exactly the same time that Lauren would be at the clinic.

“Darn it,” Beth said, giving a pained look to her friend, “I’ll be sure to get her to sign a copy for you too!”

Lauren traced the words on the poster, a faraway look appearing on her face. “No, I think I will just skip my appointment...just this once.”

Grabbing Lauren by the shoulders, Beth turned her in order to get good eye contact, “Are you nuts? There’s no way I’m going to let you do that. You could get so sick! Your life depends on dialysis until a kidney is found!”

Lauren laughed, placing her hands on her hips. “So, you’re saying that I can’t use the excuse of having something else to do to skip them—because they’re too important?”

“Yeah, duh!”

“I guess they are kind of my lifeline – those appointments, huh? Kind of like how as Christians our personal quiet time with Christ is our spiritual lifeline . . .”

Beth knew she’d been had. Lauren had been voicing concerns over Beth’s drifting dedication to their small group Bible study. Her new job had taken over her life and she’d been making excuses for weeks about not spending time in morning devotions with God like she used to.

“Boom. You got me.”

Friends don’t let friends miss their important appointments. No matter what. Do you have a friend who is drifting in her relationship with Christ due to ‘busyness?' Reach out to her and encourage her to return to her First Love. Throw her a lifeline and remind her who our True Lifeline is.
