Life Doesn’t Seem Fair

Description

Christians are not guaranteed an easy, trouble-free life. What we are guaranteed is that the Lord will not abandon us.

Read: Job 2:1-10 & Job 42:12

At the beginning of Job, it seems like God is allowing Job to be punished, and not just punished, but punished for doing what is good and right. Job is faithful to God, and bad things keep happening to him. As life often does, Job’s situation seems unfair.

Though a hard concept to understand, Job’s story offers some insight into the “fairness” of life. In Job 2:10, Job asks, “Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” The first time I read this, I immediately felt conviction. We willingly accept the Lord’s blessings, but we become resentful, angry and bitter when difficulty comes our way. We complain that life is unfair when we are beneficiaries of unfairness. We don’t deserve the love we receive from the Lord. We deserve the death Jesus experienced on the cross. Long before Jesus walked the Earth, Job understood that God’s goodness is a gift.

Christians are not guaranteed an easy, trouble-free life. What we are guaranteed is that the Lord will not abandon us. He can do all things, He can overcome all things, and His plans are never thwarted.

Whether we see a situation as a blessing or a curse, God makes all things work together for our good. At the end of Job’s story, we see God blessed the later part of his life more than the first. Even in our most desperate situations, God is with us and has plans to give us hope.
