We are able to bring the full authority and power of Heaven to bear on any circumstance when we truly recognize the privilege we have "in the name of Jesus."
IN JESUS’ NAME
There is power
There is hope
There is love like you’ve never known
There is forgiveness
And healing from your pain
All through the power
In Jesus’ name
READ ACTS 3:1-10
If you do something ‘in the name’ of someone else, it means you are acting as that person’s representative - like an ambassador acting on behalf of their country’s government or royalty. Along with the name comes the authority and the power of the person or body you are representing. Just so with followers of Jesus!
Peter and John have an encounter with a crippled beggar - a man for whom a handout of money seems to be his only hope. How many of us believe money is the answer to our situation when really, we need a miraculous intervention from Jesus? Peter’s reply to the man is honest, simple, and full of faith:
Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk. - Acts 3:6
Peter is simply acting in faith on the words of Jesus at the end of Mark’s gospel (Read Mark 16:15-20 as an additional reading), when he commissions the disciples for ministry and mission. It is well worth remembering that the most powerful thing we carry with us is not found in our wallet, our garage, or in our reputation, but it is the reality that for those of us who have committed our lives to Jesus and who have the Holy Spirit in us, we have the confidence and the right to operate in and through the mighty name of Jesus Christ.
We don’t pray ‘in the name of Jesus’ just because it’s a habit or because we think that’s the proper thing to do. We are able to bring the full authority and power of heaven to bear on any circumstance when we truly recognize the privilege we have ‘in the name of Jesus.’
Lord Jesus Christ,
Thank you for the reminder that my most precious treasure is the authority and power that comes with your name. Help me to step out in confidence with the authority and power that only comes from you.
