Description

Teachers will be judged with greater strictness. We need to realize how we can mistakenly influence and elevate things that offend our Lord.

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. (James 3:1 ESV)

My husband was meeting with some fellow Christian teachers at a secular university and they discussed this verse. There were varying views on the passage, but it is one that we as a couple take to heart in all sincerity. It’s a frightening thing – to be judged with greater strictness!

We are all teachers at some point of our life. I believe that. We teach our children, Sunday school kids, and are hopefully all doing our biblical responsibility of coming alongside someone younger in some shape or form. So we need to be careful!

“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. (1 Corinthians 10:23 ESV)

We ourselves may be Bereans and know how to discern what is being taught and toss any rubble, but when we promote books or YouTube clips – some of which may include a bit of solid teaching – we are giving our stamp of approval on the whole package. Sometimes, I see a post on Facebook that is very impactful and helpful quoted by someone I have grave concerns over, but in this instance have said something truly worthy of sharing. So I do share but with a disclaimer that I don’t agree with this person’s views 100% but they got this point right. Sigh.

It’s a fine line. God is the judge, yet we need to realize how we can influence and elevate things that offend our Lord, and cause others to stumble and accept lies. And as teachers, we have to remember our responsibility and His warning.

Father, we live in such a complex world! Forgive us for getting it wrong so many times and compromising on who You’ve called us to be. Help us to be a true light to those around us that are struggling and stumbling in the dark. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
