Joy in Abiding

Description

Lori Dixon reminds us that living in the peace of His presence is the only place where we experience true joy.

If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. (John 15:10-11 ESV)

The movie ‘Finding Nemo’ is one of my favorites. I love the touching story of the prodigal (fish) son, Nemo, as he gets caught up in drama when he sets off to have fun and explore – in defiance of his father. After all, he was a clownfish and wanted some adventure!

The world would like us to build our lives around the pursuit and attainment of happiness. It’s one of our enemy’s finest schemes. Just like Nemo, entertainment and consumerism tells us again and again that elusive joy is just around the next experience. So we keep on running after the wind . . .

I have struggled with this as much as the next person. My walk with Christ seems to be a roller-coaster of being tucked in tight with Him and living in the comfort of his love and joy and then I become like the distracted Dori in the movie, ‘Oh look – something shiny!’ and I’m off. Thankfully Jesus taps me on the shoulder when I am in a miserable heap and reminds me of where I should be.

Living in the peace of His presence is the only place where we experience true joy. While we may have fun on vacation or at the movies, joy is only found when we are filled to the measure by the Holy Spirit, living in obedience and in fellowship with Him. He is our joy.

Father, thank You that You have given us the simplest treasure map to find joy. Help us to not be worldly minded, running after the wind, but to remember to sit at Your feet daily, taking in Your love letter to us and allowing Your joy to seep into our souls. Amen
