Jonah obeys God’s second commission to go to Nineveh when he becomes “a sign to the Ninevites” (Luke 11:30). (The prophet would have been a walking object lesson from God if his skin was bleached from hours in the stomach of the fish.) As he moves through the city, his one-sentence sermon evokes a remarkable response of repentance and fasting among the people of Nineveh. Because of His great mercy, God “relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them.”
Thus, Jesus declared, “The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment, and will condemn it because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here” (Matthew 12:41).
