Jonah’s prayer of praise to God for delivering him from a watery grave is followed by a divine recommissioning to preach to the people of Nineveh. God prepares a “great fish” (the text does not say “whale”) to preserve Jonah and deliver him on dry land. The fish and its divinely appointed rendezvous with the sinking prophet became a powerful reminder to Jonah of the sovereignty of God in every circumstance.
Jonah’s experience of being engulfed by the deep, engorged by a great fish, and later deposited alive on land is used by Christ as a type of His death, burial and resurrection (Matthew 12:39-40).
