Joined to Be Indivisible
Our Pledge of Allegiance says, "One Nation, Indivisible" or undividable. That is somewhat true of the United States, but it is absolutely true of believers and Christ.
Jesus said in John 15:1, "I am the True Vine, and my Father is the vine-dresser (the farmer)." When you look at a vine, you really can't tell where the vine ends and the branches begin. The branches and the vine are equally the recipients of the God the Father's attention because the branches are one with the vine. As a result, the branches, we believers, have the same quality of relationship with the Father that Jesus, the Vine, has.
The Bible speaks in many ways of the inseparable relationship we have with Christ. It uses the phrase "in Christ" many times. We who have trusted the Gospel are in Christ. The metaphor of the vine and the branches reflects a reality of being in Christ: the attention the Father showers on His Son is the same attention He showers on us, and He wants us to bear fruit as His Son bears fruit. And the fruit we bear will be produced by the life of Christ within us, the life of the vine.
