After a gripping account of Jesus’ arrest, trials, and crucifixion (18-19), John provides a vivid narrative of several post-resurrection encounters between the Lord and His disciples (20-21). John’s purpose statement is the clearest in Scripture: “But these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name” (20:31). The beloved disciple selected the seven miraculous signs in 1-12 and the resurrection in 20-21 to bring the reader into an understanding of who Jesus is and to elicit a response of personal trust in Him.
Jesus’ post-resurrection appearances to Mary Magdalene, the disciples without Thomas, and the disciples with Thomas were a source of unspeakable joy.
