In this portion of His Upper Room Discourse, Jesus prepares His disciples for His departure to the Father by assuring them of His continuing presence in their lives through the ongoing ministry of the Spirit of truth. He tells His own that He will prepare a place for them and then come again to receive them to Himself. Jesus exhorts them to love Him and keep His words so that He and the Father will love them and make Their abode with them. The deep mystery contained in the seven words, “You in Me, and I in you” speaks of the mutual indwelling that is the central truth and dynamic of the spiritual life. Jesus promises them a transcendent source of peace that can overcome their anxieties.
