Jesus Rescued You from the World System
For everything in the world–the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life–comes not from the Father but from the world (1 John 2:16).
Adam and Eve only thought they were choosing independence. What they really chose was bondage. That tree of the knowledge of good and evil had never caught Adam’s and Eve’s eyes before Satan came along. Only then did this tree look desirable. Only then did they want to be like God. Only then were they willing to “exchange the truth about God for a lie” (Romans 1:25).
Darkness is ruled by dark forces. Contrary to what we think, no one is independent or free. Everyone is under the control of someone else.
When you lived in the dark, “You followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient” (Ephesians 2:2). This is a tough truth to swallow. It smacks our pride and ego. We want to shout, “Don’t tell me someone else is calling the shots. I’m living life my way!”
That’s exactly what Satan wants us to think. He is so clever and deceitful. He made Adam and Eve think the idea to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was their own. The “ruler of the kingdom of the air” does the same to us. But in reality, the choices we made in the darkness were laid out for us by the world system. We were merely following the ways of the world.
The world offers only a few things on its menu. These items have been preselected for you. Read the fine print–“No substitutions.” The offerings may be presented to you in different ways, but the choices the world offers boils down to these three: “For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life–comes not from the Father but from the world” (1 John 2:16).
When Jesus rescued you, he set you free from the world system. He released you from its power. He turned you “from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God” (Acts 26:18).
To cross over from death to life is to cross from bondage to freedom.
