Jesus, Lamb of Sacrifice

Just as God provided the lamb to Abraham and Isaac, so too does He provide the Lamb to us.

Genesis 22:6-8

Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.

God tested Abraham to see if he would be obedient to God, even by sacrificing his son. Abraham passed the test by showing his willingness to follow God even when what God asked him was really hard and he didn’t understand it. But within the context of this story we read some amazingly prophetic words. Abraham says, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering.”

You see, lamb had been used as a sacrifice to God in recognition of man’s sin. Abraham knew this and so did Isaac, what wasn’t clear to Isaac was where the lamb was coming from. Whenever they had sacrificed a lamb before, they had always brought it to the altar themselves; this time, God said He would provide the lamb.

Just as God provided the lamb to Abraham and Isaac so long ago, He provided the Lamb to us. This Lamb of sacrifice for our sins, this Lamb of God who was slain, this Lamb who rose again... this is Jesus.
