Jesus, Help Me!
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1
My aunt Gerry was treated for melanoma on her heel five years ago. Since then, she had been cancer-free, until a spot showed up last month on her liver. Because of blood-clotting issues, she cannot have surgery. So the doctor recommended a less-invasive procedure to treat the tumor on her liver.
The way it was described, it seemed the procedure was fairly simple. My aunt, as well as the rest of us, expected it wouldn’t be especially painful. We were wrong. In reality, it was a horrifying experience. After a month’s time, she is finally starting to feel better, and get her sense of humor back. I visited her the other day and she was telling me about being half- awake during the procedure. She told me to imagine a Roto-Rooter going through my groin on the way to my liver. We laughed about it now, because we can. She related to me, rather theatrically, that at one point during the procedure she remembers yelling, “Jesus! Help me! Oh, Jesus! Help me be able to stand this!”
It was so funny we both laughed till we cried. On my way home, however, I thought more about it. Even though it is funny to imagine her yelling for Jesus during the procedure, the truth is that it is also completely normal and right—exactly what she should have done. What all of us should do in a similar situation, or any situation, for that matter.
FAITH STEP: Is there a need in your life today? It could be a matter of life and death, or it could be something small. Nothing is too big for Jesus, and nothing that concerns us is insignificant to Him. Call out His name! He stands ready to help.
