It's Not the "Where" That Matters

It’s not the "where" that matters. According to Jesus, it’s the how.

God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth (John 4:24).

Where do you worship the Lord?

Jesus turned this question on its head in a conversation with a Samaritan woman. She was puzzled that Samaritans and Jews worshiped in different places.

As a Samaritan her place of worship was Mt Gerizim.

For the Jews, Jerusalem was the sacred place.

So she raised the question to Jesus hoping that he could give her the right answer.

Jesus said to her, “A time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.”

It’s not the where that matters.

According to Jesus, it’s the how.

The kind of worshipers the Father seeks are those who worship him in Spirit and in truth.

That’s why he doesn’t point us to a place, but to a person.

You worship the Father when you abide in the Son by grace through faith.

And that happens wherever you are.

Worship is not an activity for one day of the week in one particular place. It is an ever-present internal focus on Jesus Christ. Abiding in him, by grace, through faith is the kind of worship God desires.

Don’t be distracted by buildings or days of the week or denominational rules and regulations. Simply abide in Jesus. Worship him in Spirit and in truth.
