It Happened Again

Steve Russo discusses senseless violence and its effect on this generation.

Shots fired – students wounded and killed on school campuses. A 16-year-old boy shot and wounded a classmate at Taft High School in California. Another shooting took place at Lone Star College, leaving two hospitalized. At Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, 20 children and 6 adults were shot and killed. Senseless violence resulting in horrible tragedy that left loved ones asking why?

Just think about what’s happened in the last year and its effect on this generation. Besides the shootings on school campuses, there have been people killed in movie theaters, churches and shopping malls. No place is safe anymore.

There are armed guards on many school campuses and some even have metal detectors. A friend told me his daughters are afraid to go to school because they’re worried about someone bringing a gun on campus and shooting people.

So what’s the reason behind all the violence? There’s no simple answer. We could start by looking at how support systems including the family, church, and schools have failed to address the struggles, pain and confusion kids are dealing with. Or we could talk about violent video games and other media.

Part of the solution is understanding the needs of kids today. They need help, encouragement and guidance for living in a damaged world. Kids need to feel safe, nurtured and loved by parents, teachers and other adults in their lives. They also need help in making positive, values-based decisions.
