It All Comes Back to Jesus
"In the beginning God... "—Genesis 1:1.
Look at the first four words of the Bible: “In the beginning God... ” I can’t grasp the concept of no beginning. As humans, we know that everything begins and ends—except God. He always has been, is, and always will be. I just can’t comprehend that!
But let me tell you why the first four words of Genesis actually enrich my faith. John 1:1–2 says, “In the beginning... ” Note that the gospel of John begins in the same way as Genesis. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.” Later in the same chapter, we read, “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth” (v. 14).
Who is the Word? The Word is Jesus, and the only reason I can believe in an invisible God is Jesus. And when I struggle with those unanswerable questions—such as Where did God come from? or How could He always exist?—I come back to Jesus. If Christ rose from the dead, then any biblical claims about God are possible. If He did not, the Bible says we Christians are just a bunch of fools.
My belief in God rises and falls with Jesus—His life, His death, and His resurrection.
