Involved and in Control
Psalm 2:1-4 (NIV®)
Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against his Anointed One. “Let us break their chains,” they say, “and throw off their fetters.” The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.
Do you hear what the psalmist is saying? The rulers of the earth gather together and say, “We don’t want our plans and purposes to be inhibited by God’s plans and purposes. Let’s ignore what God wants and do it our way.” It’s not a new thing. It was true in the days of the psalmist, and it’s true today. The rulers of the earth imagine that their power and their will and their determination solely direct the course of human history. And the Bible gives us God’s response. He chuckles and says, “You think so?” It’s very easy for us to get caught up in the news of world affairs and forget that Almighty God is not an absentee landlord. Yes, He sits enthroned in heaven, but He is intimately involved in our world.
Heavenly Father, thank You that You are not just aware of what is happening in the earth, but You are actively involved in bringing about Your purposes. Give us strength to look to You, Lord, as we look expectantly to that day when You will be revealed in all of Your glory. May we be found faithful until that day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
