Into the Headwind

Living in sin can be exhausting. By confessing our sins and refocusing on God, we can be renewed.

Read: Psalm 32:1-11

Recently, I was riding my bike on a beautiful day. There was a gentle breeze at my back, and I was enjoying the exercise. As I started back in the direction I had come, my previously helpful tailwind suddenly became a difficult headwind. The pleasant sunny day became just hot. My great enthusiasm turned into utter exhaustion. I found myself wishing I had ridden into the wind first and finished in the other direction.

David, whom God called a man after His own heart (Acts 13:22), also found himself riding into a headwind. Though he knew what was right, David chose to do wrong for a while. He tried to keep his sins hidden from God by not confessing them, and his strength was exhausted. Eventually, however, David changed his direction. He acknowledged and confessed his condition to God, and God forgave the guilt of his sin.

Those of us in God's family can occasionally find ourselves going in the wrong direction and riding against God’s headwind. The despair of being out of alignment with God’s plan can be a great weight and drain us of our joy. We change a headwind into a tailwind on a bike ride by simply turning around. We change a headwind into a tailwind in our relationship with God by being honest with Him. When we let go of our pride and confess our sins, God gives us the same outcome David received. We can rejoice and be glad because the exhaustion we feel when we are headed in the wrong direction is transformed into joy and enthusiasm when we simply turn toward God!

• Do you feel as if God’s “wind” is at your back? If so, rejoice and be glad!
• If not, what is going on in your life that you need to confess to God so you can turn around and be fully headed in His direction?
