Inside Comes First
Luke 1:80 (NIV®)
And the child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the desert until he appeared publicly to Israel.
Before John the Baptist was ever born, God said He was going to use him to prepare the way for Jesus. But this verse says that before John the Baptist ever had any public recognition, he grew and became strong in spirit. Personal growth, what happens within us, always precedes what happens outside us. As I look back over my years of ministry, I can say that has been consistently true: What happens beyond us is very much secondary to what’s going on within us. Life happens to all of us, and how we respond determines the arc of our spiritual growth. For each one of us, what He’s doing in us is preparing us for what He will do through us.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the privilege of playing a part in Your plans for this generation. Continue to grow me up, Lord, and mature me in ways that will help me to fulfill Your purposes, even when they are not obvious to me. With a grateful heart, amen.
