In the Nitty-Gritty of Life
‘My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you.’ (Job 42:5)
Listening to stories about God’s power and faithfulness is wonderful. How a testimony of some great healing or miraculous intervention by God builds up our faith! How exciting it is to hear someone’s story of God’s provision for them in some fantastic way, and at just at the right moment! But while such stories may do us good, they don’t in themselves bring about change in us. For that to happen, we have to encounter God for ourselves in the ‘nitty-gritty’ of life.
No one ever learnt about God’s faithfulness in the classroom or from reading Christian books or from watching Christian TV. Rather, it is in the ‘nitty-gritty’ of life, with all its troubles, all its rough and tumble, all its hard knocks, that we prove God’s faithfulness for ourselves. As with anything else in life, it is only when something is ‘put to the test’ that we can see if it really works and make it our own.
That’s what Abraham discovered when God put him to the test by asking him to sacrifice his long-awaited, promised son, and then miraculously intervening at the last moment. What Abraham had to learn that day was that it was not his son that God wanted, but his heart! This is what Job learned too when, after much questioning from his own heart and many answers from his friends, every issue was settled in just one real encounter with the living God.
Neither of these men learnt about God’s faithfulness from a book; they had to walk through life and make the promises their own. And so it is for us. It may be that you are facing some challenges or difficulties at this time. Don’t see this as God’s abandoning of you, but simply his opportunity for you to discover him again for yourself in the ‘nitty-gritty’ of life and to discover that his promises work, not just for others, but for you!
‘We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves…’ (John 4:42)
