After school, Sokleap, 11, waters lush plants in the vegetable garden in front of her house in Cambodia.
Sokleap lives with her aunt and 3-year-old cousin. Her uncle, who had been the family breadwinner, has died.
Sokleap does her part for the family by watering and weeding the garden, where they grow gourd, morning glory, pumpkin, cucumber, herb and lemon grass. The bountiful harvest provides nutritious food for the family and contributes to Sokleap’s aunt’s business selling noodle soup, porridge, and fried noodles. Sokleap also helps to raise fish in a nearby pond.
World Vision helped Sokleap’s aunt provide for the children by giving them seeds, training, young fish, and equipment for cooking and serving at the food stall.
Sokleap has been a World Vision sponsored child since the age of 9.
