In the Beginning
Read: Judges 11:1-12:15 & John 1:1-28 & Psalm 101:1-8 & Proverbs 14:13-14
Genesis 1 starts, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” You’ve probably read or heard this verse. You might even have it memorized. Another book of the Bible also begins with “In the beginning…”
John opens his account of Jesus’s life with these words: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John wastes no time telling his readers something about Jesus that was sure to rock their worlds: Jesus and God are one and the same.
Then John reveals to us that Jesus, being God, is a series of amazing things:
- Life - All things were created through Him (John 1:3-4), and all who believe in Him can have eternal life (John 3:16).
- Light - He is the light of the world that overcomes the darkness of sin (John 1:4, 5, 9).
- Love - The ultimate display of love is shown through His sacrifice for the sins of all mankind (John 1:12-14).
- Lord - He can be trusted to provide all we need (John 1:16-17).
“No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known” (John 1:18). If we want to understand the character of God, all we need to do is look at the Son of God.
