But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, “O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.” Luke 18:13-14
Hypocrisy is all about putting on a show. It’s about putting on a mask in front of people while living another way completely. In no uncertain terms, it’s all about impressing others. But we cannot do that with God.
When it comes to our relationship with God, the greatest thing we can do is simply be truthful to ourselves about who we are. God already knows it. It’s not as if we’ll surprise Him. Like the tax collector, all we can do is look to God and simply say, “O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.”
Thank God for the fact that you don’t have to pretend with Him. Thank Him for His grace, in every situation. And pray for the courage to show the real you to the world.
Write the following statement on a card that you can carry with you: What impresses God is when we don’t try to impress Him. Carry this card with you as a reminder that you don’t have to fake your way into a relationship with God.
