We are called to imitate God the Father and Jesus Christ by being loving people.

Children love to imitate. Watching professional imitators imitate the president or a famous actor or actress is entertaining. Incredibly enough though, we are asked to imitate God the Father and Jesus Christ. How are we to imitate them? By being loving people. Paul is the apostle of the heart and his great emphasis is on what goes on inside of us, our motives and perspective, our attitudes and finally our actions. If the first three are healthy, the fourth our actions will be effective.

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; 2 and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you, and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma—(Eph 5:1-2).

Paul told us that Christ has loved us by sacrificing himself for us, and the result was a fragrant aroma to God the Father. We are called to also be a fragrant aroma to God the Father in our humble way by being motivated by love. Such a compliment to be told we can actually be like God.
