I Needed Clothes and You Clothed Me

Romanian winters are cold and unforgiving to children without enough clothes to wear.

In Vaslui, Romania, harsh winters are to be expected—but that doesn’t mean that children are prepared for snow and cold temperatures with clothing to keep them warm. For families in this rural area who are already stretched to provide the basics, the added burden of extreme weather can push them toward the breaking point. Maria Oprea, 66, and her grandchildren, Ciprian and Marina, survive on Maria’s pension and the children’s allowances, which amounts to about $150 a month—and there is hardly any extra left over to purchase warm clothing.
