I'm Falling

What can you do today to give your spouse support in taking on the "lighter burden" God may want him or her to take?

My yoke is easy and My burden is light. Matthew 11:30

Jill had worked for and prayed for the promotion for ten years. At last, her husband had been chosen as the vice president of the biggest computer company in their city. They had made sacrifices along the way, especially in family time. But it had been worth it, hadn't it? An accumulation of possessions and countless vacations were the rewards of their sacrifice and hard work.

Then their world came crashing down. Their sixteen-year-old son was arrested for breaking into a pharmacy. He was looking for drugs. Jill and her husband were thankful when he was given two years of probation and enrolled in a drug rehab program.

Not long after that, Jill's husband came home early one evening to talk to her. God had convicted him of how out of balance his life had become. He wanted to quit his job and find a less-demanding position—maybe in a smaller town. He wanted to start all over and get control of their life again. But he wondered if Jill would support his decision. Would she help him learn how to be a husband and a father again?

How could Jill refuse? She loved her husband and her family. She supported him with all her heart.

A powerful way we bear burdens for others is to be reminded that Christ's "yoke is easy?' It is a great ministry to encourage one another to seek for Jesus' "light burden:' We all face stressful situations in life, but God leads us in the direction of peace and grace—just like He led Jill's husband. Jill provided her husband the support He needed to take on that lighter burden.
In marriage, we all need to do exactly as Jill did.

Lord, give me the sensitivity I need to share in my spouse’s struggles and burdens.
