I Love Cereal

What does cereal have to do with Jesus? Willie McLaurin shares a humorous analogy.

I love cereal, especially late at night as a bedtime snack. I also like to mix two or three types of cereal together, seeing what combinations may provide a more satisfying experience than anything Post or Kellog have come up with to date. One of my favorite such combinations is to mix Raisin Bran (Kellog's of course, never Post) with original Corn Flakes. I keep coming back to this combination time after time.

Mixing cereals though, is as much art as science. To ensure a balanced mix of taste in every bite, I usually put equal parts of each in a Ziploc bag and shake them together. The end result is (for me at least) very balanced and satisfying. (I know, I'm strange…)

Since this is not the healthiest habit, I try to limit my serving to one cup. However one cup of this flaky goodness just never seems to be quite enough. Then I figured out why: one cup really isn't one cup. Given the size and shape of the flakes, there is a lot of empty (wasted) space in my cup --space that could be filled with more cereal! I have found that if I take time to crush and press down the cereal while it is in the  Ziploc bag, I can fit twice as much cereal into one cup. I know... some of you are thinking, "That's cheating!" But I like to think of it as being innovative!

Whether cheating or innovative, this exercise with my nightly cereal snack nonetheless reminds me of one of Jesus' teachings. In Luke 6:38, He instructs "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Far more than Raisin Bran and Corn Flakes, Jesus wants to fill our cup with His Spirit. He seeks to saturate us with His goodness, filling the empty spaces in our lives with blessings and rich relationships, shaken together in soul-satisfying combinations. All we have to do is let Him.
