I Can't Be Out of Money Yet!

Receiving instruction from one another is one way couples can grow in wisdom.

Listen to counsel and receive instruction. Proverbs 19:20

Handling finances is a difficult area for most couples, and David and I are no exception. We've discovered that we can both benefit from instruction from one another in the area of finances

God has blessed me with a good organizational mind. I can keep track of the checkbook and our household bills without a glitch. David, on the other hand, has difficulty finding his checkbook, much less keeping it balanced. We've discovered that by allowing me to handle the monthly bills and household expenses, our family finances run smoothly. I am able to give David instruction about the status of our monthly progress and keep track of all the regular payments.

God has blessed me with a husband who enjoys handling the other finances for our family. I have little understanding—and sometimes little interest—in how the stock market works or in how our retirement plans are structured. But because of David's work on our "big" finances, we are now in the best shape we can be in.

In recent years David has taken more of an interest in showing me the financial ins and outs of our life. He cares enough about me and our family to teach me the things I need to know as his spouse. I don't worry about the future as much because I know the structure of our finances.

God wants us to lovingly instruct our spouses in the things we have learned so that we can mature individually and as a couple. Receiving instruction from one another is one way we grow in wisdom.

In what specific areas does your spouse have more expertise than you? What steps can you take to begin receiving instruction from him or her in those areas?

God, help me to be open to my spouse's instruction so that we can grow together in wisdom.
