How to Live Forever
Our youth-obsessed culture would love to stop the aging process—i.e., fix it so we never die. In lieu of that miracle, we are settling for age-hiding techniques (plastic surgery, hair coloring, and the like). But one man in history thought he had discovered the solution to living forever—alas, he died on his way to locating it.
The Spanish explorer Ponce de León, having sailed with Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the “New World,” returned a few years later and conquered Puerto Rico for Spain. From natives, he heard stories of an island called Bimini located somewhere north of Cuba—an island on which flowed a fountain of youth. In 1513, Ponce de León sailed from Puerto Rico to find Bimini and live forever young. He thought present-day Florida was Bimini, and was sure he would locate the legendary fountain. In a skirmish with Native American Indians, however, he was mortally wounded. His fountain of youth, like all others, lies undiscovered still.
Undoubtedly, the modern penchant for youthfulness has something to do with mobility, vitality, energy, and strength. But the bottom line is what it always has been: a denial of the approaching reality of death. The preservation for youthfulness is the ultimate form of procrastination—most people would rather face a root canal than planning their own funeral. At least the trip to the dentist is temporary; the one to the you-know-where is permanent.
But there is a simple way to live forever. Jesus Christ said, “He who believes in me will live, even though he dies.” If it seems like a paradox, it is: you have to die first, then you live forever. The “dying first” part is what people don’t like. That part requires faith that what Jesus said happens next really will happen—that after you die, you get to live forever. What most people don’t know is that Jesus made that statement right before he brought back to life a man who had been dead for four days.
Anyone offering never-ending life should have credentials worthy of their claims. Only one person has ever conquered death himself and offered that same opportunity to others—Jesus Christ.
God’s Promise to You: “Dying with faith in my Son means you will live forever.”
