How Do I Obey?

Description

Do we love and respect God enough to obey to the last detail, even if He asks us to do something we don't understand or when we can’t see the full picture?

Scripture: Leviticus 7:1-8:36

Moses carried out the building of the Tabernacle exactly as God instructed without understanding its purpose. Noah followed God’s precise directions when building the ark though he didn’t see any impending rain. These men loved and respected God so much that disobedience wasn’t an option. What about us? Do we love and respect God enough to obey to the last detail, even if He asks us to do something we don't understand or when we can’t see the full picture?

Jesus speaks of our love and obedience in John 14:15, "If you love me, obey my commandments."

The Greek translation of the word obey means to attend to carefully, take care of, to guard, and to observe. I love the thought of meticulously tending to everything God asks me to do, but I don’t always love doing it. Can you relate? Obedience flows from a heart of love for God, not necessarily from our duty to follow His instructions. We obey because we love.

The more we love God, the more we will love to obey. The more we love to obey, the more we will want to obey. The more we want to obey, the more we actually will obey. Obedience becomes a lifestyle rather than a task. In What Happens When Women Say Yes to God, Lysa TerKeurst defines "lifestyle obedience" like this:

Obedience is more than just "not sinning." It is having the overwhelming desire to walk in the center of God's will at every moment. Don't stumble over fearing you won't be perfect or that you are sure to mess up. Saying yes to God isn't about perfect performance, but rather perfect surrender to the Lord day by day.

Let’s pray for love and respect for the Lord, perfect surrender, and a lifestyle of obedience that will glorify God.
