Hospitality

Description

When you go about your day, do you pay attention to strangers? Do you offer them a smile, or do you brush past them in your urgency to get to your destination?

Hebrews 13:2

Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.

When you go about your day, do you pay attention to strangers?  Do you offer them a smile or brush past them in your urgency to get to your destination?  Have you ever stopped and observed what total strangers are doing around you everyday?  Most of us run in our own little world, never having time to think about what other people are doing around us, and we rarely think we could possibly offer some type of hospitality to a stranger.

You don’t have to look hard to find a stranger.  A stranger could even be someone you are in contact with everyday, but you have never looked past the body that is standing in front of you.  For instance, the bus driver that takes your children to school everyday, your mailman, the receptionist at your pediatrician’s office, the bagger at your grocery store--all these people are essentially complete strangers that you could offer up a hospitable smile or a word of encouragement to.  Paul teaches us in Hebrews that sometimes our hospitable acts are not necessarily to strangers, but to angels. That’s pretty amazing!

Prayer

Father,

I think the bottom line is that I need to slow down and “notice” the invisible people in my life.  Every person that I come in contact with throughout my day, has a life and a story too.  I know I can’t talk to every person in my world, but I could start with one stranger today.  Open up my eyes Lord and allow me to view people the way You see them--not as invisible people, but as children of God.
