Hope Makes the Differences
“Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, just as we hope in You.” Psalm 33:22 (nkjv)
This morning I attended the funeral of an old high school friend. I remember him as a “teddy bear,” the kind of guy who always smiled and joked, a person you just wanted to hug. Everybody loved him. And yet his death these twenty years after high school was a suicide. The act of one completely hopeless, utterly lost.
It has been years since I last saw him. Sitting in the funeral home today, it was impossible for me to reconcile the jolly person I knew as a kid with this man in deep darkness. I looked into the faces of his children and felt anger, confusion and, most of all, sorrow. What pushes a person to the point of total despair?
Life can be hard. That’s a given. I don’t know the details of my friend’s journey, but I suspect he had some difficult times along the way. I’ve heard drugs were a part of his recent demise, which seems consistent with a need to escape reality.
What became so clear to me as I processed his passing is that hope makes the difference between life and death. It’s what my friend lacked—and what the whole world needs. I’m not talking about “dreams” or “wishes,” those words that sound nice but slip through our fingers like sand when life lets us down. True hope, the kind that never disappoints, is found in Jesus. When it comes down to it, we can always count on Him.
FAITH STEP: Have you lost hope in a certain area? Remember, Jesus will never fail you. Renew your hope in Him today, and see His mercy rain down over your life.
