Honoring Our Elders

Put pride aside and learn from those older than you.

Mark 7:9-10 (NIV®)

And he said to them: “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’”

If you imagine yourself to be on the “younger” side of the age spectrum, I want to encourage you to have the humility and the willingness to respect and learn from those who are ahead of you. We have an amazing ability to observe our own traditions and set aside the instruction of God. We live in an age of pride, and our culture is one of almost unmitigated rebellion. And without God’s help, pride and rebellion will keep us from learning—no matter our age.

Heavenly Father, give me an attitude of humility and respect toward my elders. Help me appreciate their life experiences and the lessons I can learn from them. Renew in me the willingness to learn, for there is much about You I still need to understand. Thank You for the wisdom You promise, amen.
