Homework Is a Blessing

Description

Rocio Lopez Orosco, 11, does her homework by candlelight in Colomi, Bolivia.

“This is where I do my homework. We have no light. No electricity. This is how we live,” Rocio says.

Rocio's family does not have access to clean water at their home. They can’t afford electricity. The tin roof on their primitive house is held down by large rocks. However, despite their poverty, Rocio is fortunate that education is a priority for her family.

World Vision's long-term work in Colomi is in the early stages. Over the next 10 or 12 years, through sponsorship, World Vision will help feed malnourished children, improve access to clean water, provide vocational training, provide nutrition training, and support schools with training and materials.

Please pray for girls growing up in places where their education is not valued.

The global gender divide means a girl can expect to get 18 fewer months of education than the boy who sits next to her in class. Not surprisingly, nearly two-thirds of the world’s 775 million illiterate adults are women — a statistic that hasn’t budged for a decade. Ask God to remove roadblocks and open doors of opportunity for girls to attend school and achieve their potential.

Primary education and literacy for girls transforms and saves lives:

  • A child born to a literate mother is 50 percent more likely to survive past age 5.
  • If all women in sub-Saharan Africa completed grade school, maternal mortality would decline by 70 percent.
  • Educating girls for six years or more improves prenatal care and childbirth survival rates.

Great Provider, we know You created children with a curiosity to learn about their world. Give every girl and boy the chance to explore the world through their studies. We ask You to raise up godly leaders who will change the way girls and women are treated, opening the possibility for fuller lives and futures filled with promise.

“Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’” —Matthew 19:14 (NIV)
