And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:2-4, ESV)
“Hi!” an energetic toddler ran up to me time and time again, with each approach came a joyful, ‘Hi!’
I would return his greeting with a warm smile and a ‘Hi!’ but after a while was getting a bit irritated by the constant interruption. Could his mother not see I was busy working in the café?
As the frustrated thought crossed my mind, I echoed the fifth or sixth greeting and immediately, his face fell. Although still smiling, my countenance must have given me away. He could sense my lack of acceptance and crest fallen, dropped his head and turned back to his mother.
The Bible says that we are to be like little children, running after God with openness and full expectancy of acceptance and love. Here’s the difference, He never tires from hearing from us. Oh that we could never stop approaching the throne of God with enthusiasm and excitement. More often than not, however, we are distracted and disengaged in our worship or Bible study. So busy and self-absorbed, we no longer run towards Him, arms wide open expecting to be swooped up and embraced. We are so missing out.
Recognizing the importance of children, I turned and waited for my little visitor to approach me again. Thankfully, seeing my open stance, he did...shyly inching towards me. Giving him a full on sincere smile, I said the ‘Hi!’ first sending him laughing and giggling back to his mother.
God is waiting; He is open armed and He is calling you. Don’t be shy; he always wants to hear from his children. We should be approaching him all day with many ‘Hi’ and ‘Hellos’. Run to Him now, before you spend another moment of your day—run with abandon—like a child.
