Heed His Commands
If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your well-being like the waves of the sea (Isaiah 48:18, NIV).
“If you had paid attention to God’s commands…peace…your well-being—” The speaker’s words from Isaiah caught my attention. What did he say? Which commands? What about peace and well-being?
I sat up in the pew, alert and wondering what the connection was between paying attention—ironic, huh?—and peace and well-being. I was always on the lookout for ways to experience more peace.
I glanced down at my open Bible. There…Isaiah 48:18. It seemed once again God was reminding His people what they could have experienced had they stuck closer to Him. But that one verse didn’t detail which of His commands. I stayed focused for the remainder of the Bible-study lecture.
Ever been amazed by a verse’s simple depth? I began to wonder whether I was paying heed to all of God’s commands—not just the Big Ten, but other ones tucked away here and there throughout Scripture.
For instance, how had my worrying been lately? Jesus tells me not to do it in Matthew 6:25. He also tells me repeatedly to trust Him, to not fear, and to love others. Do I exhibit all the qualities of love that 1 Corinthians 13 describes? patience, kindness, humility, unselfishness, forgiveness, etc.? If not, I’m not really obeying the command to love.
I felt overwhelmed over how much work I had to do. My head swam and drowned any lingering threads of peace I had going for me. But then I remembered Jesus’ admonishment that living by His commands comes much easier when I focus on Him. The next instant I felt something else: peace.
FAITH STEP: Do your own study on Jesus’ peace. Look up three verses about peace, and ask Jesus to help you stay focused on Him.
