Heart Attacks

Description

We all have a choice to leave a scent of sweet joy to those we interact with each day, or we can repulse others and drive them away.

Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. (Proverbs 4:23 ESV)

Have you ever met someone that just made you immediately take a step back – for your own personal safety? There is something about an aggressive, mean person that can just throw us off our day.

I know if we lived in a perfect world and if I was a perfect person, my reaction would be to step closer and offer prayer or a good word. But neither the world nor I are perfect, and instead of reaching out, I usually try to find the closest exit. I’ve been known to whisper to the girls as we leave a business where we were under attack, ‘Well she’s just not living her dream’ or something similar. We all have had bad days – right?

So when I was recently in Proverbs, I paused when I read, ‘Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.’  I thought about how we choose what kind of waters are going to spring forth from us; springs of refreshment . . . or bitter waters. Bad, unfortunate and even horrible things may come our way, but it’s up to us to prepare and guard our hearts so that bitterness can’t take root.

We all have a choice in how we will live out our days here on earth. We can leave a scent of sweet joy to those we interact with each day, or we can repulse and drive away. And, no matter how old we are, it’s never too late to get a good heart cleaning and a fresh start.

Father, forgive us for leaving bitter tastes in people’s lives. Help us to let go of resentment and hurts that our hearts would be cleansed and spring forth fresh waters to others. Holy Spirit, only by Your power and Jesus’ blood can our hearts be made new . . . come fill us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
