Rasie's mom takes care of her as she recuperates from leptospirosis, a serious infection that she contracted after Typhoon Washi hit her community in Mindanao in the southern Philippines.
The disease is caused by exposure to water that has been contaminated by waste from rats and other animals. About 200 persons in Mindanao contracted the disease as a result of wading in the flood waters during typhoon Washi.
Clean water, proper sanitation, and health care are essential in the aftermath of flooding.
